The excavator-driving safe crackers
Criminals in Northern Ireland have come up with a slightly different way of robbing banks. They systematically steal ATMs by using an excavator to rip them out of buildings. This extremely brutal method causes a lot of mess, but it is really efficient and takes no longer than 20 minutes. The thieves first steal an excavator, which is normally used to build houses. Then they drive the excavator and a van to the building where the ATM is located. They use the stolen excavator to smash through the wall to get to the ATM, which they then load onto the van with an excavator shovel. They then flee with it and calmly crack open the ATM. Once they have done this, they often find themselves with the impressive sum of up to £50,000. This lucrative method is used to rob not only bank buildings, but also supermarkets and gas stations if they have ATMs. However, these excavator attacks, which are very popular, have now become a political issue. This is because ATMs are often the only way for people in remote areas of Northern Ireland to access money, as many bank branches have been closed for cost reasons. However, ATM robberies using excavators are not only taking place in Northern Ireland, but worldwide, and are usually successful. Sometimes audacity does pay off.
